Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy - hands-on care that helps the nervous system achieve balance and harmony.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that works with the body's own capacity to heal itself. It balances and revitalises the whole body by supporting the flow of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) between the head (cranium) and the bottom of the spine (sacrum).

The aim of the therapy is not to diagnose or fix a problem in the medical sense. Instead, the sessions focus on the body's inner vitality and wisdom, allowing adjustments to occur naturally. The treatment consists of very light, hands-on techniques that release tension and allow the body to self-correct at its own pace.

The touch is so subtle that from the outside, it does not look like anything is happening at all. However, the effect can be as deep as it is gentle! In CST, the mind, body and soul are seen as part of the same circuit. On one level we are working with bones, tissues, fascia and lymph. On another, CST taps into universal life force, the “chi”, “prana” or the “breath of life” that activate everything. It can act as a profound reset for the brain, creating deep rest and slow Theta states that lead to dream like experiences. It can also work on a somatic level, allowing for emotional blockages to be resolved.

Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy

While craniosacral therapy can support a wide range of concerns, I'm especially passionate about working with complex relational trauma, trauma caused by war and displacement (recent and long held), ancestral patterns, menopause and perimenopause transitions, grief, anxiety, overwhelm and fatigue.

I qualified in Biodynamic Craniosacral Therapy with Body College, London UK, in 2024. My wider training in trauma sensitive yoga, polyvagal theory and ancestral healing informs how I work in the room.

Who is CST for?

Craniosacral therapy is a complementary treatment and works alongside, not instead of, the care of your doctor or specialist.

People often turn to craniosacral therapy for support with:

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Headaches and migraines
  • Chronic pain and tension
  • TMJ (jaw pain or dysfunction)
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Nervous system regulation
  • Digestive issues
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Post-traumatic stress
  • Recovery from injury or surgery
  • Birth trauma (for infants and adults)
  • Emotional processing and integration
  • Sensory processing issues
  • Fatigue and burnout

What happens during a session?

The first session will be 75 minutes (including intake), and subsequent sessions are 60 minutes.

The treatment consists of lying on a treatment table in regular everyday clothes, usually on your back but sometimes on the side or supine, covered in a light blanket. It is also possible to be sitting on a chair for the treatment, if you are unable to lie down.

Using a light touch or ‘holds’, I listen to the body for patterns of tension or imbalances. I may ask you some questions about what you are feeling in your body, or if anything is coming up. Otherwise, the session is overall quiet.

The holds are to the head, along the spine, on limbs, joints and diaphragm. By creating the right conditions between practitioner and client, the body's natural intelligence and ability to heal and repair itself are triggered.

How will I feel after?

  • You may feel a deep sense of calm and more connected to yourself.
  • Fuller, easier breathing
  • Better posture, more comfort and ease in your body
  • Improved sleep
  • Sometimes, an emotional wave, or vivid dreams in the following 24-72 hours
  • You may feel tired, or more quiet than usual for a couple of days as your system integrates

All of the above is normal. I recommend that you take some time for yourself, stay hydrated and make no big decisions for a couple of days after a session.

Contraindications

CST is a very safe modality, suitable for new born infants and the elderly.

However, the following are contraindicated:

  • Recent intracranial hemorrhage or acute stroke
  • Recent brain injury
  • Recent spinal or skull injuries
  • Active brain aneurysm or cerebral aneurysm.
  • Elevated intracranial pressure, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage or hydrocephalus.
  • Recent skull fracture, major head or spinal surgery or unstable spinal pathology.
  • High-risk pregnancies and active infections are relative contraindications that need caution or delay.

FAQs

What are the origins of CST?

Craniosacral Therapy as practiced in the Western world today was developed by Osteopaths in the early 20th century.

However, it may have a much earlier origin. Some researchers connect its origins to Indian Buddhism, whilst others connect it to indigenous American bodywork.

What is CSF?

Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulates between the spinal cord, brain, and surrounding membranes, nourishing, protecting, and supporting them.

It acts as nutrient delivery and waste removal to the central nervous system, making the proper flow of CSF key to balance and vitality, with disruptions leading to dysregulation and inflammation.

What does Biodynamic mean?

The biodynamic model focuses on subtle quantum forces, making it ideal for trauma therapy. Therapists listen to physiological responses and support natural processes without directing outcomes.
